The cost of living in Karnataka is set to rise as the state government has announced multiple price hikes across essential services.
Diesel Price Hike
The Karnataka government has increased the sales tax on diesel from 18.44% to 21.17%, leading to a ₹2 per liter price hike, effective immediately. Despite this increase, diesel prices in Karnataka remain lower than in neighboring states.
BBMP’s Garbage Cess
Bengaluru residents will now pay a solid waste management fee, as BBMP has introduced a mandatory garbage cess on residential buildings, shops, and hotels. Fees range from ₹10 to ₹400 per month, depending on property size. The cess will be collected annually with property tax and is expected to generate ₹600 crore in revenue.
Milk Price Increase
From April 1, the price of Nandini milk and curd has gone up by ₹4 per liter. The Karnataka government and the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) justify the increase as a move to support dairy farmers, claiming Karnataka’s milk prices were lower than in other states.
With previous hikes in electricity and essential goods, these increases add to the financial burden of Karnataka’s residents.
