PhonePe Faces Boycott in Karnataka Over CEO’s Anti-Reservation Remarks
The CEO of PhonePe, Sameer Nigam, has faced severe criticism in Karnataka after his recent comments opposing the state government’s job reservation policy for Kannadigas in private industries. His remarks have triggered a widespread backlash, leading to calls for boycotting the popular UPI app.
Social Media Outcry and Campaigns
Since the controversy erupted, hashtags such as #BoycottPhonePe and #UninstallPhonePeApp have been dominating platforms like X (formerly Twitter). Numerous Kannadiga users have passionately urged others to delete the PhonePe app as a gesture of self-respect. Videos of people uninstalling the app and business owners removing PhonePe QR code stickers from their shops have gone viral.
Calls for Apology and Constitutional Rights
Many netizens have demanded an apology from Sameer Nigam, asserting that his remarks disrespect the local culture and constitutional provisions. “Sameer Nigam owes Kannadigas an apology. His comments undermine the principles of equality enshrined in our Constitution,” remarked a Twitter user from Rajasthan.
What Did Sameer Nigam Say?
On June 17, Sameer Nigam voiced his opposition to Karnataka’s policy, stating, “I am 46 years old and haven’t lived in any state for more than 15 years. My father served in the Indian Navy, and we moved frequently. Are the children of such families not eligible for employment in Karnataka? I have built companies and provided jobs to over 25,000 people. Are my children not eligible for employment here? This is a shame.”
The backlash continues to escalate, reflecting deep-seated sentiments among Kannadigas regarding their rights to local employment opportunities and cultural respect.
