Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday said the India–European Union Free Trade Agreement will significantly benefit Assam’s tea industry by enabling duty-free access to European markets, strengthening export opportunities for growers and traders.

Addressing a public rally at Khanikar Parade Ground in Dibrugarh ahead of the Assembly polls, Shah noted that tea produced in the state will now be able to reach consumers across all 27 countries of the European Union, creating new economic prospects for Assam.

Duty-free access expected to widen markets

Shah said the trade agreement will allow Assam tea to enter European markets without import duties, improving competitiveness and profit margins for exporters. He added that the move is expected to encourage higher production and investment in the tea sector, which is a major contributor to the state’s rural economy.

Global recognition for Assam’s iconic produce

Highlighting the broader impact, Shah said the agreement has placed Assam tea firmly on the global stage, enhancing international recognition for one of India’s most renowned agricultural products. He credited the development to the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying the deal reflects India’s growing economic engagement with global partners.

Industry observers believe the agreement could strengthen Assam’s position in global tea exports, increase foreign demand and create employment opportunities across plantations, logistics and processing sectors.

The tea industry remains one of Assam’s most vital economic pillars, and stakeholders have welcomed measures that promise wider market access and improved trade conditions. Analysts, however, note that long-term gains will depend on consistent quality, branding and supply chain efficiency alongside favourable trade policies.
