Union Budget 2025: Transforming India’s Education Sector

India’s Union Budget 2025 is expected to build on the consistent rise in education funding. While the 2024 allocation stood at ₹1.48 lakh crore—with ₹73,498 crore directed to the Department of School Education and Literacy—experts believe further investment is critical for meeting the demands of a rapidly evolving job market. Despite allocating over 4% of its GDP to education, India still lags behind countries like the US (5%) and Canada (5.5%).

Prioritizing Modernization in Education

As the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 outlines ambitious reforms, key focus areas for increased allocation include:

  • Digital Infrastructure: Enhancing online learning capabilities through better technology and resources.
  • Teacher Training: Investing in programs that improve pedagogical skills and integrate technology into teaching methods.
  • Skill Development: Aligning initiatives with industry demands to ensure students graduate with market-relevant skills.

Bridging Gaps with Strategic Investments

Poshak Agrawal, Co-founder of Athena Education, highlights digital education and skill development as essential to modernizing India’s educational landscape. Similarly, Sumit Kumar, Chief Strategy Officer at TeamLease, emphasizes the need for professional development programs for educators, including workshops, certifications, and advanced tools.

Vision for the Future

The Union Budget must support achieving a 50% Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) in higher education by 2035, up from 28.3% in 2024. Substantial investments in infrastructure, teacher training, and digital education are essential for creating a skilled workforce, which will drive GDP growth and economic progress.
