Magadi Lake in Shirahatti taluk, Gadag district, has emerged as a key destination for migratory birds, attracting over 130 species annually. Birds from Mongolia, Siberia, Australia, and other distant regions flock here for breeding and habitat. This season, the rare Greylag Goose has been spotted among species like the Bar-headed Goose, Painted Stork, and Brahminy Duck.

Despite its Ramsar Wetland status, the lake faces challenges such as pollution from agricultural runoff, lack of visitor amenities, and inadequate infrastructure. Poor water quality led to bird fatalities last year, raising concerns among environmentalists.

Improved management, pollution control, and eco-tourism infrastructure are essential to preserve Magadi Lake’s biodiversity and attract tourists while supporting the local economy.
