Collared Bar Headed Goose Spotted At Magadi Lake, Gadag

A bar-headed goose with collar ID “X-52” was sighted at Gadag’s Magadi Lake, a Ramsar-listed wetland, attracting migratory geese from Mongolia, China, and the Himalayas. This goose was previously documented at the lake in 2019.

Magadi Lake hosts the largest annual congregation of bar-headed geese in South India, with up to 5,000 arriving each winter. The forest department and ornithologists like the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) monitor these birds for research.

Concerns about disturbances and water hyacinth growth prompting birds to shift to nearby lakes like Shettikerehalli have spurred local conservation efforts. Birders are calling for stronger protections and awareness programs to preserve this crucial migration site.
