Hassan: In a tragic development, Kushal (22), a final-year MBBS student at Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences (HIMS), has died due to complications from dengue fever. Kushal, originally from Gohalli in Holenarasipur taluk, was in his third year of medical studies at HIMS when his health deteriorated rapidly.

On Thursday, Kushal’s condition worsened, leading to his admission to a private hospital. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to the illness on Friday. The loss has deeply affected his family and the medical community, as Kushal was a promising student with a bright future ahead.

Kushal was born into a modest family; his father, Manjunath, is a small-time businessman, and his mother, Rekha, is a tailor. Both parents have been battling dengue as well. Manjunath, who was also undergoing treatment at HIMS, has recovered and was recently discharged. However, Rekha remains hospitalized at a private facility.

The death of Kushal is part of a troubling trend in Hassan district, where dengue fever has claimed four lives, including three children, so far. The district has been grappling with a significant outbreak of the disease, exacerbated by the ongoing monsoon season which often increases the risk of mosquito-borne illnesses.

Health authorities are ramping up efforts to combat the outbreak, including increased surveillance and public awareness campaigns. Residents are urged to take preventive measures to control mosquito breeding and seek medical attention promptly if symptoms of dengue appear.

Kushal’s untimely death highlights the urgent need for effective public health interventions and continued vigilance to prevent further loss of life in the district.
