Haveri: The Haveri Institute of Medical Sciences (HIMS), along with 27 other medical colleges in Karnataka, has been fined by the National Medical Commission (NMC) for failing to meet required standards. HIMS has paid a penalty of Rs 15 lakh in response to the NMC’s findings.
The NMC’s inspection revealed several deficiencies at HIMS, including inadequate infrastructure and lack of essential facilities. Notably, issues included missing MRI scan facilities, insufficient human cadavers for anatomy classes, and an inactive histopathology department. Despite these shortcomings, the NMC has indicated that HIMS will be allowed to admit students for the upcoming academic year, provided the penalty is paid.
Dr. Pradeep Kumar MV, Dean of HIMS, confirmed the payment of the penalty and acknowledged the issues cited by the NMC. “We had hoped for an exemption due to the college being new and still in the process of establishing infrastructure, but our request was not accepted,” he stated. Dr. Kumar assured that the college is addressing the deficiencies, including procuring additional cadavers to meet the NMC’s standards.
Social activist Abdul Hubballi criticized the situation, urging that instead of focusing on penalties, HIMS should ensure compliance with NMC standards from the outset. He emphasized the importance of maintaining high educational standards and providing quality education.
