Mysuru: Being active during pregnancy is going to improve the health of both the baby and the mother and it also prevents other health related complications, said Dr. Veena, Consultant, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Columbia Asia Hospital, Mysuru. During an interaction programme, the common question the pregnant women and their family members posed was what should they eat and what type of exercise should they undertake during their pregnancy period. Pregnant women along with their husbands and family members, had come from across the district for the educative awareness programme.

Parent Craft, an exclusive programme hosted by Columbia Asia Hospital, is an educative and informative session which covered all the aspects of maternity about pre and post natal care in a unique interactive programme which involved doctor interaction, live recipes for a healthy diet, demo of exercises for mothers-to-be, live healthy food counters and baby shower programmes. All the participants were also given educative materials.

Dr. Veena also said, “The average weight gain during pregnancy should be between 8 kg and 12 kg. If they put on more weight, there are chances of getting back pain and the women may also end up having diabetes, hypertension and baby gaining more weight due to which the chances of caesarean delivery are more.”

Inactiveness during pregnancy may worsen the muscles and cause more problem to the baby, added Dr. Veena. She also mentioned that during pregnancy most of them want to know about their diet and what type of exercise they can do, how much weight they should gain during pregnancy and when it comes to labour, what exactly is the process, how they can have a more comfortable delivery and how to look after the new born baby”, added Dr. Veena. Dr. Madhura Phatak, Consultant, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Columbia Asia Hospital, Mysuru was also present.

Arafat Ahmed Aizaz, Marketing Manager in a private firm who had come along with his wife said, “It was a very good educative programme. Both I and my wife got to know of a lot of things that we were not aware of. The nearly 100 pages book given by them also contains a lot of information which is not even easily available on the internet.”

More than 30 pregnant women along with their husbands and family members from across the district, took part in the educative awareness programme.
