In an extraordinary medical feat, a 64-year-old American music teacher, Joseph D’Souza, played his guitar during a seven-hour brain surgery at Bengaluru’s Bhagwan Mahaveer Jain Hospital. Joseph, suffering from guitarist dystonia, a neurological condition causing pain and impaired finger movements, underwent the procedure without anesthesia to remain conscious.
Doctors drilled into his skull and identified the nerve triggering his symptoms by monitoring his finger movements as he played the instrument. This allowed precise intervention to address his condition.
Joseph, a Los Angeles-based teacher, had struggled with the disorder for 20 years, resigning from his job and reducing his guitar playing due to persistent pain. After consulting numerous doctors without success, he decided to seek treatment in Bengaluru, despite initial reservations.
“I was skeptical about coming to Bengaluru, but I am thrilled now. I can play the guitar again,” Joseph shared after the successful surgery.
Dr. Sharan Srinivasan, the neurosurgeon who led the operation, confirmed that Joseph would need three months of rehabilitation to retrain his muscles before fully regaining his musical abilities.
This remarkable case showcases Bengaluru’s emergence as a hub for advanced medical procedures, offering hope to patients worldwide.
