Cardiologist Urges Action to Prevent Dengue Outbreak in Mangaluru
Dr. Padmanabha Kamath, a prominent cardiologist, has called on Mangaluru city authorities to urgently address the potential dengue outbreak in the city. Highlighting the public health risk posed by stagnant water at the construction site of the multi-level car parking (MLCP) complex in Hampankatta, he emphasized the critical need for immediate action.
“The city has recently seen a concerning rise in dengue cases and related complications,” stated Dr. Kamath, a consultant cardiologist at KMC Mangaluru. “The primary cause is water stagnation, which provides ideal breeding grounds for Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, the vector responsible for dengue transmission.”
During his walk through the city, Dr. Kamath identified the construction site at Hampankatta as a significant reservoir for stagnant water, posing a serious health risk. He urged the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) to implement effective source reduction measures to eliminate breeding sites and reduce the risk of dengue transmission.
The Rs 94 crore MLCP project, initiated in 2021 under a public-private partnership (PPP) model through Mangaluru Smart City Limited (MSCL), has faced significant delays due to the non-performance of the concessioner. Despite the delay, MSCL has released guppy fishes into the stagnant water to mitigate the mosquito breeding issue.
Arun Prabha KS, MSCL General Manager (Technical), acknowledged the delays and assured that corrective measures are being taken to expedite the project and address the public health concerns raised.
