Gabriel Pascal, a 43-year-old optometrist from Nigeria, faced severe facial nerve paralysis due to a bony tumor affecting his ear bones. This condition made it difficult for him to smile, speak, or even close his eyes. His struggles included food escaping his mouth and excessive eye watering, which led to significant emotional distress and social isolation.
Pascal sought advanced treatment options and chose Trustwell Hospitals for their expertise. Initially, he underwent tumor excision and reconstruction at a different facility. Subsequently, he was transferred to Trustwell Hospitals for specialized facial paralysis treatment.
Trustwell’s surgical team, led by Dr. Vishwas Vijayadev—India’s first International Board-certified Diplomate facial plastic surgeon from the USA—performed a groundbreaking procedure known as facial reanimation. This intricate surgery involved a double nerve transfer: one nerve was taken from Pascal’s leg and connected to the functioning side of his face, while another nerve was rerouted to restore facial muscle function. This complex procedure, lasting 11 hours, required precise intraoperative nerve monitoring to ensure the nerves were correctly aligned and functioning.
Dr. Vishwas Vijayadev’s team, including Dr. Anand Subhash, Dr. Stuti Mahajan, and Dr. Sravya Kakollu, executed the surgery with advanced techniques and state-of-the-art equipment sourced from the USA, Europe, Israel, and Taiwan. The anesthetic team, led by Dr. NS Chandrashekhara and Dr. Jaydev, managed the delicate balance of medications throughout the prolonged surgery.
Facial reanimation, a rare and advanced procedure, requires careful handling of nerves to ensure successful outcomes. Trustwell’s commitment to cutting-edge technology and specialized care was evident in this case, setting a new standard for facial paralysis treatment in India.
Guruprasad, Director of Strategy at Trustwell, expressed satisfaction with the outcome, noting, “We are thrilled that our team managed this challenging case with precision. The patient is recovering well and is expected to lead a normal life once the healing process is complete.”
