Padumale: Heritage Site Celebrates Tulu Nadu’s Folk Heroes with Medicinal Plant Park
Padumale, located in Puttur taluk, Dakshina Kannada, is renowned as the birthplace of Koti and Chennayya, the legendary twins of Tulu Nadu. The area has been designated a heritage site, and a notable feature is its medicinal plant park, established to honor Deyi Baidethi, the twins’ mother and a renowned Ayurvedic medicine practitioner.
The park, which covers 9.5 acres, includes 6.75 acres dedicated to a variety of over 500 medicinal plants. Its primary goal is to educate the local community about the benefits of therapeutic plants. The park features notable species such as Rudraksha, Bamboo, Ashoka, Wild Cinnamon, and Indian Gooseberry. It was opened to the public in 2016 but was closed to visitors four or five years ago due to unforeseen circumstances.
Named after Deyi Baidethi, the park highlights her contributions to Ayurvedic medicine, particularly her treatment of leg pain suffered by the former Ballala ruler, Padumale Ballal. The king’s positive experience with her methods enhanced her reputation.
The park also includes a recreation of Deyi Baidethi’s hut, a separate play area, a volleyball court, a hall for plant information, a watchtower, and food vendors. It serves as a cultural and educational site, promoting awareness and appreciation of traditional medicine and local heritage.
