A food safety probe in Bengaluru has uncovered alarming contamination in the city’s favorite breakfast—idli. Officials collected 251 samples from various outlets, and shockingly, 54 were found unfit for consumption due to harmful plastic exposure.
Investigators traced the issue to eateries using plastic sheets while steaming idlis, allowing hazardous chemicals to seep into the food. Experts caution that heating plastic releases toxic compounds like BPA, phthalates, and dioxins, which have been linked to cancer, hormonal imbalances, and immune system damage.
Consuming plastic-contaminated food can also trigger inflammation, disrupt gut bacteria, and elevate the risk of metabolic disorders. Medical professionals emphasize that even small amounts of plastic exposure over time may lead to severe long-term health effects.
Authorities are now urging food vendors to adopt safer steaming methods, such as using banana leaves or muslin cloth, to prevent contamination. Consumers, too, are advised to be vigilant about where they source their idlis and insist on hygienic preparation practices.
As awareness spreads, health experts stress the urgent need to minimize plastic use in food preparation. Adopting eco-friendly alternatives will not only safeguard health but also reduce environmental pollution caused by plastic waste.
