In a remarkable medical feat, doctors at AJ Hospital & Research Centre, Mangaluru, successfully removed a massive 950-gram renal tumour from a 48-year-old female labourer using robot-assisted surgery.
The patient, a resident of Karwar, had been experiencing persistent pain in her left abdomen for two months. Initial tests revealed a large mass in her left kidney, prompting a referral to AJ Hospital. Advanced imaging and biopsy confirmed an 8.2 x 5.4 x 16 cm fibrous tumour encasing the kidney.
A team led by Dr Prashanth Marla, along with Dr Pritham Sharma and Dr Roshan V Shetty, performed a robotic radical nephrectomy using the cutting-edge fourth-generation Da Vinci Robotic System. The tumour was removed through a small incision, ensuring a minimally invasive procedure.
According to Dr Marla, the patient had minimal blood loss, experienced very little pain, and was discharged just three days later. The entire treatment, including surgery, was fully covered under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, providing crucial financial relief.
The surgical team also included anesthetist Dr Harish Karanth and robotic scrub nurse Ms Roshni, ensuring precision and patient safety throughout the complex procedure.
This case highlights the efficiency and potential of robotic surgery in treating complex conditions, even for patients from underprivileged backgrounds.
