Arkalgud: In a troubling incident on Thursday, twenty students from Varanandi High School in Ragimaruru village, Arkalgud taluk, fell ill after consuming their midday meal. Allegations surfaced that a lizard was found in the food served to the 114 students at the school.

The midday meals, typically served in the afternoon, reportedly caused stomach pain and vomiting among those who ate. Promptly, some of the affected students were rushed to the Ganguru Primary Health Centre for treatment. Among them, six students who experienced severe discomfort were taken to the government hospital in Arkalgud, while two others were transferred to the Hassan district hospital for further care.

Local MLA A Manju, along with Block Education Officer (BEO) Narayan and Akshara Dasoha officer Rangaswamy, visited the hospital to check on the students’ health. MLA Manju emphasized the importance of taking preventive measures to avert such incidents in the future. In response to the situation, BEO Narayan has directed that notices be issued to the midday meal assistants to address the lapse in food safety protocols.

This incident raises serious concerns regarding food safety in schools and the need for stringent quality control in the midday meal program to ensure the health and well-being of students.
