With a surge in Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) cases in Mumbai and Pune, Bengaluru Police have issued a public advisory on the rare autoimmune disorder. Police Commissioner, in a recent Instagram video, stressed the need for early detection, warning, “GBS is on the rise—early diagnosis is crucial. Stay informed to stay safe!”

GBS deaths in Mumbai and Pune

A 53-year-old Mumbai resident recently succumbed to GBS, marking the city’s first fatality linked to the condition. Authorities are investigating whether it is connected to Pune’s outbreak. Meanwhile, a 16-year-old girl from Palghar and a 64-year-old woman from Andheri are receiving treatment for GBS in Mumbai.

Pune: The worst-hit region

Pune remains Maharashtra’s epicenter, with 2,037 suspected GBS cases reported as of February 12. Of these, 176 have been confirmed. The state’s death toll has risen to nine, including one in Mumbai and eight in Pune. A 59-year-old man from Khadakwasla recently died at Navale Hospital after a GBS diagnosis.

Geographical spread in Pune

GBS cases are distributed across Pune’s municipal and rural regions, with 41 diagnosed cases from Pune city, 94 from newly added villages, 29 from Pimpri Chinchwad, and 31 from Pune Rural. Authorities continue monitoring the outbreak.
