Dharwad: The District Civil Hospital, currently situated in the Fort area, will soon be relocated to a spacious 20-acre site near Belur, 11 km from Dharwad. The move comes as expansion is hindered due to the hospital’s location in a protected ASI site, where construction of new buildings is restricted.

Serving over 600 outpatients daily and handling multiple deliveries, the hospital plays a crucial role in providing affordable healthcare to people from Dharwad and nearby districts. However, narrow access roads and frequent traffic congestion have made ambulance movement difficult, adding to the urgency of relocation.

The new 500-bed hospital, estimated at ₹460 crore, will be equipped with modern medical infrastructure, including a cardiology block to treat heart patients in golden hours. Dr. Sangappa Gabi, the district surgeon, confirmed that a proposal has been sent to the government for approval. The new facility will also include an STP unit and will help reduce patient referrals to KMC-RI in Hubballi.

Local elected representatives have shown strong support for the project. Meanwhile, the current hospital premises will be repurposed into a Mother-Child Hospital, ensuring continued healthcare access.
