Dharwad’s SDM Narayana Heart Centre, located in Sattur, has achieved a major milestone by performing the twin cities’ first-ever Micra leadless pacemaker implantation. The minimally invasive cardiac procedure was conducted on a 79-year-old businessman from Bengaluru who had been suffering from recurrent blackouts caused by a slow heartbeat due to an atrioventricular (AV) block.
The patient had been facing frequent dizzy spells and episodes of fainting since June last year. One fainting incident even resulted in a nasal fracture, while another led to a road mishap. After his admission, doctors carried out a comprehensive cardiovascular assessment, including ECG, echocardiography, Holter test, coronary angiography, and blood analyses to confirm the diagnosis.
Dr. Raghu Prasad S, Senior Consultant Cardiologist, who led the team, explained that the surgery was scheduled and carried out using a keyhole technique. “Unlike traditional pacemakers that need a chest cut and wires, this tiny, wireless device is introduced through a vein in the groin and placed inside the heart. This method significantly lowers complications and enhances patient recovery,” he said.
The 45-minute operation involved directly implanting the device into the right ventricle, enabling it to maintain a steady heartbeat by emitting electrical pulses. About 93% smaller than conventional pacemakers, this capsule-sized tool offers a modern solution for bradycardia.
The patient was discharged within 24 hours and is now back to his routine without issues. The facility is renowned for its advanced cardiac treatment options.
