Chia seeds are widely regarded as a superfood, loaded with fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, and antioxidants, often used in smoothies, puddings, and health-focused diets. However, doctors now caution that these seeds, despite their numerous benefits, should be consumed carefully to avoid health hazards.
Dr Kunal Sood recently responded to a viral video where a person pleaded to stop drinking chia seed water after being hospitalized. He explained that while chia seeds support heart health, digestion, and weight management, their high liquid absorption ability can pose risks if consumed dry.
Highlighting a case, Dr Sood mentioned a 39-year-old man who swallowed a tablespoon of dry chia seeds followed by water. The seeds rapidly expanded in his throat, causing a life-threatening airway blockage.
How to consume chia seeds safely:
-
Always soak chia seeds in water or liquid for at least 10-15 minutes before consuming.
Start with small quantities and stay hydrated.
Consult a doctor if you’re unsure about incorporating them into your diet.
While chia seeds are nutritious, mindful preparation is key to reaping their benefits safely.
