Guru Gobind Singh Medical College in Faridkot, Punjab, is set to revolutionize public healthcare with the introduction of dual laser technology for urological treatments—a first for any government medical institution in India.
The cutting-edge equipment will help treat kidney stones and prostate conditions through minimally invasive, bloodless procedures, particularly benefiting elderly patients and those with heart conditions. This dual laser machine replaces the need for two separate units, offering cost efficiency and quicker recovery. Patients on blood thinners can undergo treatment without needing anesthetist clearance, with most expected to leave the hospital within a day, significantly reducing inpatient loads.
Dr Rajeev Sood, Vice-Chancellor of Baba Farid University of Health Sciences and a urology expert, confirmed that successful trials have been conducted and the facility will open to the public soon. Special wards are being prepared, and surgeons are undergoing training.
Further strengthening its position as a leader in public medical innovation, the institution is also introducing robotic surgery facilities—a first for Punjab’s government healthcare system. With ₹3 crore CSR funding from HDFC, a simulator has been installed to train surgeons. Dr Parvinder Singh is spearheading this training initiative. The ₹18 crore robotic system is currently in the final procurement phase, with facilities being readied for oncology, ENT, cardiology, and gynecology surgeries.
