Jayakrishnan’s life began with challenges carved in stone. At just a schoolboy in Class 8, he took up hard labour in a granite quarry to support his struggling family. His early years were marred by suffering—he endured severe burns at the age of two, requiring months of treatment. Born to Manikuttan, a daily-wage mason from Poovelil in Edamaruku, Melukavu, and his wife Ratnamma, Jayakrishnan’s path was never smooth.
Tragedy struck again on March 27, 2001, when a life-altering accident left his lower body paralysed. For four long years, he remained confined to bed, unable to move. But even in the depths of despair, he found purpose. During his hospital stay, he met others battling similar physical and emotional pain. That encounter ignited a spark.
Determined to rise, Jayakrishnan first stood with a walking stick, then found mobility through a specially modified tri-scooter. His mission became clear—uplift those living with physical limitations.
In 2015, with guidance from Soja Baby, a compassionate head nurse and legal aid volunteer, and Rev Dr KK Samuel of the CSI Church, Daya, a palliative care collective, was born. Backed by Bishop Mar Jacob Muricken of the Pala diocese, Daya has since become a sanctuary of support.
From offering plastic surgeries and adaptive housing to free medications, legal help, and marriage support, Daya has touched hundreds of lives. Jayakrishnan continues to move hearts, just as he once moved stone.
