Ajman: In a defining move for veterinary and medical education in the UAE, Gulf Medical University (GMU) has received initial approval from the Commission for Academic Accreditation (CAA), UAE, to launch its Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) programme under the newly established Thumbay College of Veterinary Medicine. The development represents a landmark achievement for Thumbay Group, reinforcing its commitment to the One Health philosophy — a vision that integrates human health, animal well-being, and environmental sustainability.
Pioneering a veterinary ecosystem in the UAE
The initiative marks a major step toward meeting the region’s growing demand for veterinary expertise, driven by rising pet ownership, livestock health needs, food security concerns, and global awareness of zoonotic disease prevention.
Dr Thumbay Moideen, Founder President of Thumbay Group, announced a comprehensive veterinary ecosystem designed to integrate clinical, academic, and research excellence.
“The Thumbay Veterinary Clinic is already open in Muwaileh, Sharjah. Construction of the Thumbay Veterinary Hospital in Thumbay Medicity will commence soon and is expected to be operational by September 2027,” he said.
He further added that Thumbay Farm for Large and Small Animals, Thumbay Veterinary Lab, Thumbay Veterinary Pharmacy, and Thumbay Veterinary Clinics in Dubai and Ras Al Khaimah, along with a Veterinary Clinical Skills Lab in Dubai, will all form part of the new college’s network.
World-class education and global partnerships
The DVM programme at GMU aims to deliver a globally aligned, research-driven education that combines rigorous academic training with practical exposure. With an annual intake of 60 students, the programme provides access to over 30 academic and industry partnerships, offering students hands-on experience in advanced diagnostics, clinical rotations, research, and international best practices.
GMU’s collaborations include ties with globally renowned institutions such as the Royal Veterinary College, London, and Don State Technical University, Russia, as well as several universities across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. These partnerships will drive faculty development, student mobility, joint research, and curriculum innovation, ensuring that graduates are prepared to meet both local and global challenges in veterinary science.
Strengthening One Health and regional biosecurity
Commenting on the launch, Prof. Manda Venkatramana, Chancellor of Gulf Medical University, stated,
“The launch of Veterinary Medicine at GMU is a natural extension of our mission to prepare the next generation of healthcare professionals who serve humanity holistically. The One Health approach is no longer optional; it is a global necessity.”
He highlighted that integrating veterinary and human medical education under one academic ecosystem enhances research, supports regional food and biosecurity frameworks, and strengthens public health initiatives.
Building a sustainable veterinary future
Thumbay Group’s expansion into veterinary education and services aligns with the UAE’s national vision for scientific advancement and community well-being. The new network of veterinary hospitals, clinics, and laboratories aims to create a platform where education, clinical excellence, and innovation intersect, preparing graduates to address emerging challenges such as zoonotic diseases, wildlife conservation, and food safety.
Through these efforts, Thumbay Group is positioning the UAE as a regional hub for veterinary science, research, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
