KALGHATGI: A health scare has erupted in Mutagi village, Kalghatgi taluk, Dharwad district, where over 70 individuals fell ill after consuming contaminated water between Wednesday and Thursday. Reports indicate that ten people are currently receiving treatment at KIMS Hospital in Hubballi, while 36 others are being cared for at the Kalghatgi taluk hospital. Fortunately, timely medical intervention allowed the remaining affected individuals to recover quickly.

Symptoms among the affected include vomiting, diarrhea, and general uneasiness, all linked to the consumption of the tainted water. In response to the crisis, Deputy Commissioner Divya Prabhu has suspended local Panchayat Development Officer Praveen Kumar Ganni due to negligence in water management.

During her visit to Mutagi, Divya Prabhu informed reporters that the village’s water supply is sourced from three overhead tanks fed by borewells. It is suspected that contaminated water from an overflowing local lake may have infiltrated one of the uncapped borewells. To address the situation, water samples have been sent for testing to ascertain the contamination’s cause.

Authorities are urged to ensure strict monitoring and maintenance of water sources to prevent such incidents in the future.
