Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, has achieved a significant medical breakthrough by successfully performing an innovative procedure known as Endoultrasound-guided Gastrojejunostomy (EUS-GJ). This advanced endoscopic technique was used to treat an elderly gentleman suffering from malignancy-induced gastric outlet obstruction, which had severely impaired his ability to eat.
The procedure, led by Dr. Shiran Shetty, Professor of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, involved connecting the stomach to the small intestine to bypass the obstruction. Dr. Shetty described the procedure as a Japanese innovation designed to allow patients to resume oral feeding. The operation was performed under minimal sedation, contributing to its minimally invasive nature.
The patient responded positively to the treatment, began eating orally shortly after the procedure, and was discharged just 48 hours later. Dr. Ganesh Bhat, Professor and Head of the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, praised the benefits of the procedure, noting its short hospital stay and quick recovery time due to minimal sedation. He also highlighted that the procedure was carried out in the hospital’s new state-of-the-art endoscopy room.
Dr. Avinash Shetty, Medical Superintendent of Kasturba Hospital, expressed pride in the hospital’s advanced capabilities, stating, “Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, is the first in this region of Karnataka to offer such a cutting-edge facility with a highly trained team of doctors.” He congratulated Dr. Shetty and his team for their successful execution of the procedure.
This milestone reflects Kasturba Hospital’s commitment to providing advanced medical treatments and superior patient care in the region.
