In collaboration with KidneyCAN, CancerNetwork® spoke with Eric Jonasch, MD, about the Kidney Cancer Research Consortium’s mission to advance treatments for kidney cancer. As the principal investigator, Jonasch explained that the consortium, backed by a Department of Defense (DoD) grant, aims to accelerate the improvement of renal cell carcinoma treatments through a nationwide network of specialized clinical trial centers.

Jonasch, a professor at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, emphasized the importance of novel treatment agents, innovative trial designs, and incorporating advanced studies, such as biopsies and biomarker analyses. These strategies, combined with cutting-edge technologies, will enhance tumor targeting and provide better insights into how cancer and immune cells interact with treatment.

The consortium’s approach involves conducting clinical trials that industry would typically not pursue, enabling faster and more efficient knowledge gains. Additionally, by utilizing state-of-the-art technologies to analyze tumor behavior, researchers can assess how effective treatments are, both for tumor and immune cells. This comprehensive approach aims to improve kidney cancer treatment outcomes more quickly and accurately.

KidneyCAN, a nonprofit focused on advancing kidney cancer cures, supports the consortium’s research efforts through education, advocacy, and funding. Through their combined efforts, both organizations are committed to finding better treatment solutions for patients battling kidney cancer.
