Swiss chocolatier Lindt, known for its premium offerings, is embroiled in a class-action lawsuit after a Consumer Reports study revealed high levels of lead and cadmium in some of its dark chocolates. Tests on Lindt’s Excellence Dark Chocolate bars in 2022 showed levels exceeding recommended limits—up to 166% for lead and 116% for cadmium.
Lindt defended its products, claiming heavy metals are naturally present in the environment and trace levels in its chocolates meet regulatory standards. However, health experts warn that prolonged exposure to these metals can harm the immune system, increase cancer and cardiovascular disease risks, and impair cognitive development.
Health Tips for Chocolate Lovers:
- Opt for chocolates with less than 70% cacao to reduce exposure.
- Limit consumption to occasional treats.
- Diversify snacks to avoid overexposure to heavy metals.
While dark chocolate is celebrated for its antioxidants and health benefits, moderation and brand scrutiny are essential for safe enjoyment.
