Mental Health Concerns on the Rise Among Children in Dakshina Kannada
Mangaluru: The District Mental Health Programme (DMHP) has highlighted an increasing number of children in Dakshina Kannada diagnosed with mental health conditions, particularly attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and intellectual disability (ID). There is also a noted rise in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) cases, according to mental health professionals in the region.
From May to December 2023, 623 children under 18 sought help through DMHP, with 734 more accessing services between January and October 2024. Dr. Prajakta V Rao, consultant psychiatrist at DMHP, shared that the majority of these cases were ADHD and ID, followed by ASD, clinical depression, behavioural disorders, substance dependence (alcohol, cannabis, nicotine), and internet or mobile addiction.
The programme has observed increased awareness among parents and caregivers, contributing to early intervention and diminishing stigma surrounding mental health. Teachers, nurses, ASHA workers, and NCC cadets regularly receive training to identify mental health concerns early and direct children to appropriate services.
There has also been a noticeable rise in substance abuse among children, including alcohol and cannabis use, with some schoolgirls reported to be using cannabis. Dr. Rao emphasized the importance of early identification and intervention in these cases, with some children receiving medication for ADHD and ID cases qualifying for government schemes and academic concessions.
The district’s efforts include the implementation of an anti-drug cell programme across educational institutions, where teachers are trained to recognize mental health issues. Additionally, counsellors are available in all taluk and district health centers to support children and adolescents.
