New Delhi: Health experts have stressed the importance of mothers prioritising their heart health through simple daily lifestyle habits, warning that women often neglect their own wellbeing while caring for their families.
Experts said cardiovascular health is influenced not only by age or medical emergencies, but also by everyday habits such as diet, physical activity, sleep, stress management and preventive healthcare.
The advisory comes amid growing concerns about increasing cases of high cholesterol, diabetes and hypertension among Indian women, many of which remain undetected until routine medical examinations.
Silent health risks often overlooked
Doctors noted that many mothers tend to postpone health check-ups, skip exercise and compromise on proper meals while focusing on family responsibilities.
Experts warned that such repeated neglect of self-care can gradually increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases over time.
According to health professionals, heart-related risk factors often develop silently, especially among women, making preventive screening particularly important.
Studies indicate that nearly one in four Indians has high cholesterol, while around one in ten people lives with diabetes — both major contributors to cardiovascular disease.
Health experts said many women remain unaware of elevated blood pressure, cholesterol or blood sugar levels until the conditions are detected during medical tests.
Healthy lifestyle choices can reduce risk
Shilpa Vora, Chief Research and Development Officer at Marico Limited and foods expert associated with Saffola, said heart health can be strengthened through practical and sustainable daily habits.
She highlighted the importance of mindful dietary choices, particularly regarding cooking oils commonly used in Indian households.
“The type of oil used regularly influences the quality and balance of fats consumed through meals,” she said.
According to Dr Vora, selecting oils with a healthier fatty acid profile as part of a balanced diet may support long-term cardiovascular wellness.
Experts also emphasised that healthy eating should include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds and fibre-rich foods while avoiding frequent meal skipping.
Preventive screening and exercise important
Doctors advised women to undergo regular preventive health screenings to monitor cholesterol levels, blood sugar and blood pressure.
They said early identification of risk factors allows timely intervention before serious complications develop.
Experts also encouraged mothers to adopt consistent physical activity routines, even if moderate in intensity.
Activities such as walking, yoga, stretching and light exercise can significantly support cardiovascular health when practised regularly.
Health professionals stressed that physical activity does not necessarily need to be strenuous to provide benefits.
Importance of sleep and shared responsibilities
Experts further highlighted the importance of adequate sleep and stress management for maintaining heart health.
Quality sleep plays a major role in regulating metabolism, reducing stress and supporting overall cardiovascular function.
Doctors warned that chronic fatigue, irregular sleep and prolonged stress may contribute to long-term health complications.
Health professionals also encouraged families to share household and caregiving responsibilities to reduce the physical and emotional burden often carried by mothers.
According to experts, stronger support systems can help women create sustainable routines that allow time for exercise, rest and preventive healthcare.
“Self-care is essential, not selfish”
Dr Vora stated that mothers often form the foundation of family health through the choices they make in daily life.
“Heart health begins with everyday choices, and the kitchen is often one of the most powerful starting points,” she said.
She added that women should not view prioritising their own health as selfish.
“For mothers, making space for their own health through mindful eating, movement and regular screening is essential. A healthier mother creates the foundation for a healthier family,” she said.
Health experts reiterated that consistent preventive care and balanced lifestyle habits remain among the most effective ways to reduce cardiovascular risks and improve long-term wellbeing.
