Two new cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) have been confirmed in Nagpur, Maharashtra, bringing the total number of reported cases in India to seven. These cases, involving a seven-year-old and a 13-year-old, mark the first instances of HMPV in children older than infants. Initially suspected to be infected with H1N1 (swine flu), the children’s condition was later confirmed through polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests to be HMPV.

Previously, cases of HMPV were reported in Karnataka, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu, primarily among infants. The recent development in Maharashtra has raised concerns, prompting a review of the current situation. Union Health Secretary Apurva Chandra has led an assessment of respiratory illnesses across the country and the public health response.

Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda reassured the public that India’s surveillance systems remain on high alert, with the country prepared to manage any health challenges. Additionally, Union Health Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava convened a virtual meeting with states and Union Territories to discuss the rising cases of respiratory illnesses, including HMPV, and to coordinate public health measures, especially in light of a surge in cases in China.
