As Diwali festivities continue, ophthalmologists in Pune are urging caution following a spate of eye injuries related to firecracker use. Victims, ranging from five-year-old children to young adults, experienced various injuries while either bursting crackers or observing the celebrations.

Dr. Sachin Bodhale from Netra Eye Clinic reported treating around 10 cases of eye-related injuries over the past three days. Most injuries were minor, including corneal damage, burning of eyelashes, and superficial skin burns. “The victims were primarily aged between five to 10 years. Fortunately, none of the injuries were serious or sight-threatening,” he noted.

Dr. Anil Dudhbhate from Dr. Dudhbhate Netralaya and Retina Centre recounted a case involving a 10-year-old who suffered a superficial corneal burn but has since recovered fully, maintaining his vision. Another incident involved a 24-year-old man who was watching firecrackers when an explosion caused debris to enter his eye, resulting in a minor corneal burn; he recovered within three days.

Ophthalmologists are calling for government intervention to regulate the quality of firecrackers available in the market to prevent such injuries in the future.
