In a remarkable medical achievement, a Bengaluru-based engineer underwent a second heart transplant, a rare procedure that has been claimed as the first in the state and the second in the country. Venkatesh, originally from Andhra Pradesh, faced dilated cardiomyopathy and severe heart dysfunction at the young age of 24, leading to his first heart transplant.
Seven years later, complications arose due to narrowing of arteries in his transplanted heart, necessitating a second transplant in December 2023. Dr. Nagamalesh UM, lead consultant and interventional cardiologist at Aster CMI Hospital, Bengaluru, explained that the first transplant failed due to vascular disease, a common cause of transplant failures.
The retransplant surgery was complex, involving the removal of the old transplanted heart over a period of five to six hours, with subsequent complications in the groin area post-operation. Despite these challenges, Venkatesh has shown remarkable recovery without complications in the last six months.
What adds a heartwarming touch to this tale is Venkatesh’s unwavering support from his childhood sweetheart, Rupa, who stood by him through his health struggles and married him in 2018 despite objections from her parents. Rupa’s dedication and love have been a constant source of strength for Venkatesh, exemplifying courage and commitment in the face of adversity.
