World Food Safety Day is being observed on June 7 with global health agencies calling for stronger action to reduce foodborne diseases and improve food safety systems worldwide.

This year’s theme, “From burden to solutions – safe food everywhere,” highlights the need to transform scientific evidence into practical measures that protect consumers and strengthen public health.

New report reveals global burden

To mark the occasion, the World Health Organization (WHO) released updated findings from its Foodborne Disease Burden Epidemiology Reference Group (FERG).

According to the report, unsafe food causes an estimated 866 million illnesses and 1.5 million deaths globally each year. Young children remain among the most vulnerable groups affected by foodborne diseases.

The findings underline the continuing need for stronger food safety practices throughout the food supply chain.

FAO showcases food safety solutions

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has launched several initiatives as part of the observance.

A newly released feature story highlights how food inspectors in Comoros are using risk-based inspection methods to strengthen food safety and consumer protection. The initiative forms part of FAO’s broader efforts to improve national food control systems across multiple countries.

FAO is also releasing a podcast featuring experts from the Codex Alimentarius Commission, discussing how international food standards help reduce foodborne illnesses and improve food safety worldwide.

Focus on antimicrobial resistance

As part of the World Food Safety Day campaign, FAO will host international webinars focusing on foodborne antimicrobial resistance and risk-based food inspection systems.

Experts will discuss how science-based regulations, stronger monitoring and a One Health approach can help countries reduce food safety risks while improving public health outcomes.

Why food safety matters

Food safety affects every individual, from farmers and food processors to retailers and consumers. Experts stress that safer food not only protects health but also supports economic growth, international trade and food security.

World Food Safety Day serves as a reminder that ensuring safe food is a shared responsibility requiring cooperation among governments, industries and consumers alike.
