The Global Hunger Index (GHI) has placed India 105th out of 127 countries, categorizing it under serious hunger levels. The 2024 report by Concern Worldwide and Welthungerhilfe emphasizes that hunger issues will persist in many impoverished nations unless significant measures are implemented.
With a score of 27.3, India is grouped with countries like Pakistan and Afghanistan, while neighbors Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka show better performance in the moderate category.
Key statistics reveal that 13.7% of the population is undernourished, 35.5% of children under five are stunted, and 2.9% die before their fifth birthday. The GHI relies on four indicators: undernourishment, stunting, wasting, and mortality rates.
The report warns that achieving the UN’s Zero Hunger Goal by 2030 appears increasingly unlikely. Globally, approximately 733 million people struggle with hunger daily, while 2.8 billion cannot afford a nutritious diet. Conflict exacerbates food crises, particularly in regions like Gaza, Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
This urgent situation calls for a reevaluation of food access and rights.
