A 13-year-old girl died at a private hospital in Farrukhabad, 10 days after she was allegedly beaten by a teacher at her school, police said on Tuesday.
Kshama, a Class 8 student at Composite School in Sahuwapur under the Bharkhani development block, had reportedly gone to school for an examination on August 20.
According to a complaint filed by her father, Kshama got into a fight with a classmate during the examination. She reportedly approached a teacher to complain about the incident, but the teacher allegedly beat her instead.
Police said the girl sustained injuries and was subsequently undergoing treatment at a hospital in Farrukhabad. She died on Sunday evening.
Teacher allegedly beat girl after complaint
Additional Superintendent of Police (Hardoi) Subodh Gautam said an FIR had been registered following the complaint by Kshama’s father.
The complaint names school headmaster Akshay Singh Yadav, class teacher Rajendra Gangwar and the teenage classmate. Police have registered a case under sections relating to culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
The circumstances surrounding the girl’s death are now being investigated.
Headmaster and teacher suspended
Basic Education Officer Prabhat Mishra said the education department had also received a video purportedly showing the teacher beating Kshama.
According to Mishra, the video was examined and the department found that the teacher had beaten the student on August 20.
Following the incident, both the headmaster and class teacher were suspended. Departmental action against them is underway.
The case has raised serious concerns over the treatment of students in schools, with police and education officials continuing their respective investigations into the circumstances that preceded the girl’s death.
