A nine-year-old girl allegedly died after being administered an injection at a medical store in the Uruwa area, police said on Monday.

The deceased, identified as Divya, was a resident of Masuriya village under the Bansgaon police station limits. She had reportedly been suffering from a mild cough and fever.

Condition worsened within minutes

According to a complaint lodged by her mother, Shashikala, she took Divya to S N Medical Store in Joharabad around 4 pm on Sunday. The mother alleged that the store operator administered an injection immediately after examining the child.

Within minutes, Divya’s condition reportedly deteriorated rapidly, and she collapsed. She was declared dead soon after.

Following the incident, the store operator allegedly locked the premises and fled the scene.

Probe underway

Police reached the location after being informed and sent the body for post-mortem examination. Station House Officer Jitendra Kumar Singh said the exact cause of death would be determined after receiving the autopsy report.

A case has been registered based on the mother’s complaint, and efforts are ongoing to trace the accused.

Meanwhile, Dr J P Tiwari, in-charge of the Uruwa Primary Health Centre, described the matter as serious. He emphasised that medical stores are authorised only to dispense medicines and are not permitted to administer injections or provide clinical treatment.

Authorities said further legal action will follow based on the post-mortem findings and investigation outcomes.
