In a shocking incident that has sparked political outrage in Punjab, a village sarpanch affiliated with the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was shot dead during a wedding ceremony in Amritsar district on Sunday. The killing took place in full public view, raising serious concerns over law and order in the state.

The deceased has been identified as Jarmal Singh, a resident of Valtoha village in Tarn Taran district.

Shot during wedding ceremony

According to police and eyewitness accounts, Jarmal Singh was attending a relative’s wedding at the Marigold Resort in Amritsar when the attack occurred. He was reportedly seated at a table and eating when unidentified assailants entered the venue and opened fire.

Eyewitnesses said two shots were fired at close range, with one bullet striking Singh in the head. He collapsed instantly and was rushed to a nearby hospital in a critical condition, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Attackers allegedly disguised as guests

As per media reports, the attackers had allegedly entered the wedding venue disguised as baraatis (wedding guests), allowing them to move freely without arousing suspicion. The shooting caused panic and chaos among attendees.

AAP MLA Sarwan Singh Dhun, who was present at the venue, stated that the attack appeared to be pre-planned and targeted.

Police launch multi-angle probe

Amritsar Deputy Commissioner of Police Jagjeet Walia said a case has been registered and investigations are underway from all possible angles.

“During the initial investigation, we learnt that the attackers had entered the premises with the intention to kill him and opened fire,” the DCP said. Police are analysing CCTV footage from the resort and questioning eyewitnesses to identify and track down the assailants.

Threats and extortion angle under lens

According to family members, Jarmal Singh had allegedly been receiving threats and extortion demands from gangsters in recent months. He had reportedly filed a complaint with the Valtoha police earlier, a factor now being closely examined by investigators.

Jarmal Singh had earlier won two elections as a sarpanch backed by the Shiromani Akali Dal before later joining the Aam Aadmi Party and securing his last term with its support.

Political shock and public anger

The daylight murder has triggered widespread shock and anger across the region, with political leaders demanding swift arrests and stricter action against organised crime in Punjab. Security has been tightened in sensitive areas following the incident.
