Panic gripped a residential area of Punjab’s Amritsar on Sunday after a shooting incident left a man and a woman injured, triggering fresh concerns over safety and law and order in the city.
The injured were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors confirmed that their condition is stable and they are receiving medical care.
Shooting outside salon shocks residents
According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred when the injured man, who works as a daily-wage labourer, visited a local salon in the neighbourhood. Moments later, a scooter-borne assailant arrived from the side and opened fire, discharging multiple rounds before fleeing the scene.
Residents said the sudden gunfire caused chaos, with people running for cover as panic spread through the area.
Victim claims no enmity
The injured man told police that he had no personal enmity with anyone and was unable to understand why he was targeted. The incident has reportedly left him and his family in shock.
Police officials said they are probing whether the shooting was a case of mistaken identity or linked to other motives.
Police scan CCTV footage
The police have launched an investigation and are examining CCTV footage from nearby areas to identify the shooter and track the escape route. Preliminary findings suggest that the accused fled immediately after the firing.
“We are investigating the incident from all angles,” a senior police officer said. “CCTV footage is being reviewed and witnesses are being questioned. The accused will be arrested soon.”
Local anger, police assurance
The incident has raised serious concerns among residents, who have demanded swift and strict action against those responsible. Locals said such violence in residential colonies has created fear, especially among families and shop owners.
Police have assured the public that the case is being treated with priority and that law and order will be maintained. Support is also being provided to the injured persons and their families.
Renewed focus on neighbourhood safety
The shooting has once again highlighted concerns over illegal firearms and sudden acts of violence in urban residential areas. Authorities said increased patrolling and surveillance measures are being considered to prevent similar incidents.
For now, residents remain on edge as police continue efforts to track down the accused and bring those responsible to justice.
