New Delhi– A US-bound Air India flight made a precautionary U-turn to Mumbai on Wednesday morning due to a suspected technical issue, officials said. The flight, AI191, had taken off from Mumbai International Airport for Newark but returned safely without incident.

Flight details and air return

According to an airline spokesperson,

“The crew of flight AI191 operating from Mumbai to Newark on 22 October made a precautionary air-return to Mumbai due to a suspected technical issue.”

The aircraft landed safely back in Mumbai, where it was taken out of service for detailed inspections.

Flight cancellations and passenger support

As a result of the air return, flights AI191 and AI144 operating between Mumbai and Newark were cancelled. Air India confirmed that all affected passengers were assisted promptly.

Passengers in Mumbai were provided hotel accommodations and rebooked on alternative Air India or other airlines’ flights to reach their destinations. Those in Newark on AI144 were also notified of the cancellation and offered support with alternative travel arrangements.

“The flight landed safely back in Mumbai, and the aircraft is undergoing necessary inspections. All affected passengers at Mumbai have been provided hotel accommodations and have been rebooked on alternative flights,” the airline said.

“Passengers of AI144 from Newark were also notified of the cancellation and are being assisted with alternative arrangements at the earliest opportunity,” the statement added.

Technical issues and safety measures

Air India emphasised that the air return was a precautionary measure. The airline follows strict protocols to ensure passenger safety whenever a suspected technical problem arises during flight.

Experts note that such precautionary air returns are standard safety practices in civil aviation, designed to minimise risk and ensure passenger well-being.

Conclusion

The incident caused temporary disruptions to the Mumbai–Newark route but was handled smoothly by airline personnel. All passengers were accommodated, and investigations into the aircraft’s technical issue are ongoing. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and have assured the public that safety remains the top priority.
