An Air India pilot was arrested at Vancouver International Airport last week while preparing to operate a scheduled flight to Delhi, prompting Canada’s aviation regulator to warn the airline about strict compliance with alcohol consumption rules.
According to Transport Canada, the incident occurred on December 23. The agency said it would engage with Air India and Indian aviation authorities to ensure “appropriate follow-up actions” are taken.
Arrest before scheduled Delhi flight
Police said the arrest followed a “report of concern” involving an airline crew member. The Richmond RCMP confirmed an investigation is ongoing but declined to release further details.
An airport spokesperson said the pilot had been preparing for Air India’s daily Vancouver–Delhi service. The flight was delayed for several hours due to the incident but later departed safely.
Air India did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Strict alcohol regulations for crew
Transport Canada reiterated that Canadian aviation regulations strictly prohibit pilots or crew members from performing duties within 12 hours of consuming alcohol or while under its influence.
“Airlines must not assign crew who are unfit for duty,” the agency said, warning that non-compliance could lead to suspension or cancellation of flight authorisations, in addition to judicial or other penalties.
Oversight and international coordination
Transport Canada clarified that the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has primary regulatory oversight of Air India. However, Canadian authorities said they would take immediate action if any safety concerns are identified within their jurisdiction.
The incident has renewed focus on aviation safety protocols and cross-border regulatory cooperation, particularly on international routes involving multiple oversight agencies.
Officials emphasised that passenger safety remains the top priority and that investigations will determine whether further action is required.
