Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala): Tensions flared in Nedumangad, a town in Thiruvananthapuram district, after violent clashes broke out between workers of the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)], leading to a series of retaliatory attacks. An ambulance was set on fire and another vehicle damaged, police said on Monday (October 20, 2025).
Violence follows attack on CPI(M) leader
According to Nedumangad Police, the violence erupted following an alleged assault on a local CPI(M) leader by SDPI activists on Sunday evening (October 19, 2025). The attack reportedly sparked outrage among CPI(M) supporters, escalating tensions in the area.
“Preliminary investigation suggests that an altercation between party workers turned violent after SDPI members allegedly attacked a CPI(M) functionary. The situation worsened later that night,” said a police official.
Retaliatory vandalism and arson
Soon after the attack, unidentified individuals — some of them masked — were seen damaging an ambulance and a car belonging to an SDPI worker in Nedumangad late on Sunday night. Police suspect these acts were retaliatory attacks carried out by rival supporters.
In what appeared to be a further escalation, another ambulance operated by the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), the youth wing of the CPI(M), was set ablaze in the early hours of Monday (October 20). The vehicle had been parked near a government hospital in Nedumangad when it was torched by unidentified persons.
The fire department was alerted, and the flames were brought under control before they could spread. No injuries were reported in the incident, but the ambulance was completely gutted.
Police probe underway
Police said they have launched a comprehensive investigation to determine whether the incidents were linked to the earlier clash and to identify the perpetrators. “We are verifying CCTV footage and eyewitness statements to trace those responsible,” a senior police officer said.
The authorities have also intensified patrolling in and around Nedumangad to prevent any further outbreak of violence. Additional forces have been deployed as a precautionary measure.
Recent pattern of political violence in Kerala
The latest episode adds to a string of politically motivated clashes reported across Kerala in recent months involving workers of various parties, including CPI(M), SDPI, and BJP.
In a separate incident earlier this week, 10 people were injured when BJP and CPI(M) workers clashed in Ettumanur, Kottayam district. Law enforcement agencies have since been on high alert across politically sensitive regions of the state.
Senior officials have urged political organisations to exercise restraint and cooperate with the police in maintaining peace. “Political differences should not turn into violence that endangers lives and public property,” said a police spokesperson.
Situation under control
As of Monday evening, the situation in Nedumangad was reported to be under control, though police maintained strict vigil to avert further disturbances.
The investigation into the incidents of arson and vandalism is ongoing, and police said arrests are likely once identification of the suspects is confirmed.
