Thiruvananthapuram:
Tension gripped Nedumangad in Kerala’s capital district late Sunday night after an ambulance was set on fire and another damaged, in what police suspect to be a fallout of a clash between workers of the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)].

According to police, the incidents occurred near the Nedumangad bus stand area around midnight. Preliminary reports suggest that a heated argument between groups allegedly affiliated to both parties escalated into violence, leading to vandalism and arson.

Political clash turns violent

A senior police officer from the Nedumangad station said an investigation is underway to identify those behind the attack. “We received information that two ambulances were targeted after a local altercation turned into a group clash. One vehicle was completely gutted, while the other suffered partial damage,” the officer said.

No casualties were reported. The fire brigade was called in to douse the flames, and additional police personnel were deployed in the area to prevent further disturbances.

Police investigation underway

The Nedumangad police have registered a case and are reviewing CCTV footage from nearby establishments to trace the suspects. “We are verifying the involvement of political party workers based on preliminary inputs. A few individuals have been detained for questioning,” officials confirmed.

Local sources said tensions between SDPI and CPI(M) supporters had been simmering for several days following a minor confrontation at a public meeting. Sunday night’s incident appears to be an escalation of that conflict.

Leaders appeal for calm

Both parties have accused each other of provocation. CPI(M) leaders condemned the attack, calling it an “organised attempt to create unrest,” while SDPI representatives denied involvement and claimed that their members were being falsely targeted.

Police have urged residents to remain calm and avoid spreading rumours on social media. “We are maintaining a strong vigil. Patrolling has been intensified in Nedumangad and adjoining areas to ensure peace,” the Thiruvananthapuram Rural SP said.

Law and order under control

By Monday morning, the situation was reported to be under control, though security presence remained heavy in key junctions. The charred remains of the ambulance were towed away, and traffic movement was restored after initial disruptions.

Authorities said a detailed report would be submitted to the state government regarding the incident and any potential political motivation behind the violence.
