New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah, in an interview mentioned plans for a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and simultaneous elections in India if the BJP retains power.

 He highlighted that the UCC has been a constitutional mandate since independence, emphasizing the need for laws not based on religion in a secular nation. The BJP piloted the UCC in Uttarakhand, viewing it as a significant social, legal, and religious reform. Shah stressed the importance of thorough discussions and consultations with religious leaders and legal experts before enacting such laws nationwide.

Regarding simultaneous elections, Shah expressed support, citing the potential cost-saving benefits and the convenience for voters, especially during the scorching summer months. He mentioned the formation of a committee by Prime Minister Modi to explore this possibility and indicated the BJP’s commitment to introducing necessary legislation during its tenure.
