In a tragic incident, a constable attached to the Special Protection Force (SPF) reportedly shot himself dead with his service revolver in Visakhapatnam on Thursday morning, according to police reports. The incident, captured on a nearby CCTV camera, has sent shockwaves through the community.
The deceased, identified as Polavarapu Shankarrao, hailed from the Maddilapalem area of the city and worked as a security guard at the Visakhapatnam branch of the Indian Overseas Bank near Jyoti Book Depot in Dwarakanagar.
The incident occurred around 6 am, merely an hour after Shankarrao commenced his duty. CCTV footage revealed that he took out his service revolver and fatally shot himself in the chest, succumbing to his injuries on the spot. Upon hearing the gunshot, a nearby staff member rushed to the scene and alerted the Dwarka police station.
Shankarrao leaves behind his wife, a seven-year-old son, and a two-year-old daughter. Dwarkanagar ACP Rambabu suggested that financial constraints or other unknown reasons might have driven him to take his own life. The body has been transferred to KGH for postmortem examination.
Colleagues of Shankarrao, who were present during the incident, mentioned that they discovered him lying unconscious after hearing the gunshot. Investigations are underway, and a suicide note recovered from Shankarrao’s pocket is currently under scrutiny by senior officials.
Originally from Rajam town in Vizianagaram district, Shankarrao reportedly had no disputes with his family members or involvement in property disputes, as stated by his colleagues. However, they speculate that work-related pressures or financial difficulties may have contributed to his decision to end his life.
