Guwahati: In a major crackdown on narcotics, Assam police seized drugs worth Rs 12 crore and arrested a peddler in Cachar district on Wednesday. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed the development, calling it a significant step in the state’s fight against drug trafficking.
40,000 Yaba tablets recovered
According to officials, the operation was carried out in the Kathalbasti area near Kathal Bypass. Police seized as many as 40,000 Yaba tablets, a methamphetamine-based drug popular in parts of Southeast Asia and the Northeast.
Chief Minister Sarma took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to share details of the bust. “High hopes, hard fall. Rs 12 crore drug seized! In a precise anti-narcotics operation at Kathalbasti, near Kathal Bye Pass, Cachar Police seized 40,000 Yaba tablets and arrested one peddler,” he posted.
Assam’s continued war on drugs
Since 2021, the Assam government has intensified its anti-drug operations, targeting peddlers and traffickers operating across districts bordering states and neighbouring countries. Yaba tablets, often smuggled from Myanmar through Mizoram and Manipur, have become a major focus for enforcement agencies.
Officials said that interrogation of the arrested peddler is underway to identify the larger network involved in the trafficking. More arrests are likely in the coming days.
Chief Minister’s zero-tolerance stance
CM Sarma has repeatedly stressed that his government will continue its zero-tolerance policy against drugs. Under his leadership, Assam Police have destroyed thousands of kilograms of seized narcotics in public bonfires to send a strong message against drug abuse.
Conclusion
The latest seizure underscores the ongoing challenge of curbing drug trafficking in Assam and the Northeast. Authorities say coordinated operations and stricter surveillance will continue in order to protect youth from the menace of addiction.
