Patna: In the latest bizarre theft incident in Bihar, a pond in Darbhanga district disappeared, leaving locals bewildered. The pond, reportedly publicly owned and utilized for fishing and other activities, vanished, and a hut appeared. The baffled locals informed the police, suspecting the involvement of a land mafia.

The land mafia, accused of filling the pond to take over the valuable land, had fled by the time the police arrived. Despite previous complaints from locals about the pond-filling, the mafia managed to carry out the levelling work secretly at night, eventually making the entire pond disappear.

Amit Kumar, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), mentioned, “People say the pond was filled with soil within 10-15 days. The work was done only at night. Officials had visited the spot earlier and even seized some items.”

This peculiar incident adds to Bihar’s list of unusual thefts, including the notorious case of an entire diesel engine being stolen part by part from a railway yard in Begusarai in November 2022. Thieves dug a tunnel to the yard, gradually dismantling and removing the entire engine.

Earlier in the same year, a 60-foot bridge was stolen in Rohtas district. Thieves used JCBs and gas cutters to dismantle the bridge, and it disappeared in just three days. Eight individuals, including a government officer, were arrested in connection with the bridge theft, and 247 kg of iron channels were recovered from the accused.
