Anand Mahindra, an industrialist, has given his approval to two talented young people who transformed a recliner sofa into a transportation system.
Mahindra, who has a massive social media following, shared a video of the drivable sofa on X (formerly Twitter). The entire DIY experiment was documented in the video, from purchasing a basic recliner sofa from an online store to configuring it with a motor and wheels.
Just a fun project? Yes, but look at the passion and engineering effort that went into it. If a country has to become a giant in automobiles, it needs many such ‘garage’ inventors…

Though the duo created the moving sofa for fun, they deserve a lot of credit for their passion and dedication to automobile engineering. Mahindra believes that a country needs more passionate people like them to become a behemoth in the auto industry.
“Just a fun project?” the billionaire wrote in the post’s caption. Yes, but consider the passion and engineering effort involved. A country needs many such ‘garage’ inventors if it is to become a global automobile powerhouse. I’d like to see the look on the face of the RTO inspector in India when you drive in to register this, kids.”
The concept of the motorized sofa was created by a guy named Mekdev, who used 3D modeling to prepare the design, as revealed in the video. He then purchased a generic sofa from IKEA and modified it using his engineering skills. It is powered by a Briggs & Stratton 9 hm engine mounted in an axle. The model’s other components were mostly self-made. A remote can easily control the sofa.
Anand Mahindra’s post drew the attention of many users, who praised the inventors’ efforts and creativity. The video has received over 2,40,000 views and over 5,000 likes since it was shared on X.
Immediately after, one of the viewers said, “This is an interesting innovation.”
One person in particular is eager to see this technology in India.
“Engineers with a strong passion for automobiles drive innovation, and their garage projects frequently serve as the starting point for a nation’s progress in the sector. What keeps us moving forward is the creativity and commitment behind such initiatives,” a user wrote.
