Chennai: An on-duty constable with the Railway Protection Force (RPF) subdued a man trying to sexually assault a woman on a MRTS train and rescued the victim by jumping off a moving train at Park Town station. The Government Railway Police (GRP) attached to the Chennai Egmore Railway Station arrested the accused S Satyaraj (26) and produced him before a court.
On April 23, RPF Sub Inspector S Subbaiah and constable K Shivaji were travelling from Velacherry to Chennai Beach on the MRTS train. When the train left Chintadripet station at around 11.45 PM, they heard screams from the adjacent women’s coach. As MRTS trains don’t have a vestibule to reach the other coaches, Constable Shivaji had to wait for the train to halt at the next station, a police officer said.
The police official said that as soon as the train slowed down at the next station at Park Town, the heroic constable Shivaji jumped off the slowing train and rushed to the aid of the victim in the next coach. He rescued the woman by pushing away Satyaraj who was trying to assault the woman.
The police found the 25-year-old victim unconscious, clothes torn and her lips bleeding. She was immediately rushed to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital for further treatment.
The shocking news of attempted sexual assault has raised concerns about safety of commuters, particularly women and children, on local trains after dark in Chennai. Activists and lawyers have requested the railway police to increase the number of squads patrolling on all trains and stations in the night hours
