OpenAI unveiled a new feature called Study Mode in ChatGPT on Tuesday, July 29, aiming to transform AI learning support. Instead of providing direct answers, Study Mode guides students through structured, step-by-step problem-solving, encouraging active engagement and deeper understanding.
Leah Belsky, OpenAI’s Vice President of Education, explained that the feature was co-developed with educators and tested extensively by Indian students, even performing well on IIT-level questions. It is now accessible to logged-in users across Free, Plus, Pro, and Team tiers, and will soon reach ChatGPT Edu.
Study Mode is mobile-friendly and supports 11 Indian languages with multimodal capabilities, integrating text, images, and voice. This makes quality learning tools more accessible to students in both rural and urban regions of India.
The feature offers interactive prompts, Socratic questioning, hints, and self-reflection to promote critical thinking. It also adapts to a user’s skill level using prior chat memory and uploaded content. Progress tracking tools such as quizzes and personalised feedback are included, along with toggling options for flexibility.
OpenAI says the tool is protected by strong safety measures to prevent misuse during exams or assignments. It’s part of the company’s broader vision to make personalised AI tutoring universal.
Future updates will add goal tracking, visual explanations, and more robust personalisation. Through partnerships with Stanford and research initiatives like NextGenAI, OpenAI plans to better understand AI’s role in education and enhance tools accordingly.
