A 19-year-old college student in Tiruchi died on Wednesday from severe injuries sustained while bursting firecrackers during a funeral procession the previous afternoon.
The deceased, identified as S. Daniel, was a second-year B.Com (C.A) student at Bishop Heber College and a resident of Palakkarai. According to police, the tragic incident occurred near the MGR statue within the Sessions Court police station limits.
Daniel was participating in the funeral procession of a friend when a firecracker reportedly fell on him and exploded, causing serious injuries to his left hand, stomach, and face. He was immediately rushed to the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital for treatment.
Despite medical efforts, Daniel succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday morning. Police have registered a case under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNSS) and are investigating the incident further.
The sudden death has sent shockwaves through the student community, raising concerns over safety measures during public processions.
